Packer Engineering welcomes 2003 class of student interns

Packer Engineering is welcoming 38 college and high school students to the annual summer internship program centered at the firms Naperville and Ann Arbor sites.

The program, since the inception of its college internships in the mid-1960s, promotes the focused growth and development of students in an engineering business environment. Each student participates in both individual and team-oriented projects, increasing technical proficiencies as well as improving communication, leadership, and problem solving skills.

The internship program has two facets. College interns experience a traditional internship, exploring hands-on engineering in such disciplines as aviation, transportation, chemical, electrical, materials science, and design failure and analysis. Participants have made diverse contributions to Packer projects, such as conducting lab tests, compiling databases, attending site inspections, and analyzing costs. Other areas of focus include professional leadership and business strategies. Each year recruitment for the program begins in January with job postings to major universities nationally and to every college and university in Illinois.

The STEP (Students in Technology & Engineering at Packer) is funded by a grant from the Illinois Department of Education and began last year. It is a more structured learning experience for high school and community college students. Led by local high school science teachers, the students explore the world of engineering through academic instruction, case studies, field trips, and hands-on labs, as well as direct contact with Packer engineers and technicians. During their first summer, interns develop their academic and technical skills. The following year, they are matched with local businesses and work in a professional engineering environment. Participants are recruited from Naperville North, Naperville Central, and Aurora West High Schools; College of DuPage; and Waubonsee Community College.

Both programs are rich in opportunity, encompassing site visits to other research and practitioner institutions and mentoring by professional staff. In past years interns have toured such destinations as Caterpillar, Fermilab, Nalco, and Argonne National Laboratory and have gained insights into area buildings through the Chicago Architecture River Cruise.

Update on Spirit of Glen Ellyn

Wright Redux and Packer Engineerings flight-worthy replica of the Wright brothers 1903 Flyer is scheduled to fly on the front lawn of the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago on the weekend of September 20-21, 2003. The original plan to fly the plane from the Museum lawn on December 17 was changed because of the vagaries of December weather in Chicago. Instead, the plane will be donated to the Museum on December 17, the 100th anniversary of the first powered flight.

Meanwhile, the plane will be in the Glen Ellyn July 4 parade and at the Chicago Air and Water Show in August. For more information contact Penny Rusch at 630/577-1934 or [email protected].
