Graef, Anhalt, Schloemer & Associates, Inc. win award

The Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI) presented the 2002 Best Large Structure Award, category of construction cost greater than $5 million, to Graef, Anhalt, Schloemer & Associates, Inc. for the Milwaukee Art Museum addition.

This project includes unusual shapes of concrete and steel; cantilevered concrete canopies; a unique cable-stayed bridge; and a 110-ton moveable, winged roof with a 217-foot wingspan that opens and closes on top of a pavilion of steel and glass. The moveable roof rotates 90 degrees in three and one-half minutes to shade the pavilion. Twenty-two hydraulic cylinders nested within the main building spine operates the roof, which leans at a 48-degree angle.
